Secolul al XVIII-lea a fost considerat secolul vrajitoarelor. Poporul superstitios a invinuit in special femeile ce posedau cunostinte de tamaduire si persoanele ce prezentau diformitati corporale ca ar fi incheiat un pact cu Diavolul. Multe vrajitoare au fost arse pe rug sau spanzurate, atat in Europa protestanta, cat si in cea catolica.
