Un asteroid este un corp ceresc ce depaseste diametrul de 10 metri fiind mai mare decat un meteorit. Asteroidul se mai numeste si planetoid pentru ca este considerat ca fiind o planeta foarte mica ce orbiteaza in jurul Soarelui. Cei mai multi asteroizi ii gasim intre orbitele planetelor Marte si Jupiter, unde s-a estimat existenta a peste 750.000 asteroizi mai mari de 1 km, precum si a milioane de asteroizi mai mici.
